Queer Joy Photovoice Project:

QJPV was implemented by Wisdom2Action (W2A) in collaboration with three partner organizations: Chroma NB from New Brunswick, Edmonton 2 Spirit Society (E2S) in Alberta, and 2 Spirits in Motion Society in Saskatchewan over a two year period (2025-27). The partners set out to answer the questions, “what does queer joy look like against the backdrop of rising anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate, amidst the impacts of COVID-19, and with the existential threat of climate change?,” and, “how does queer joy strengthen 2SLGBTQIA+ communities?”

Photovoice is a qualitative approach to community-based research. Photovoice enables participants to record and reflect on community concerns and strengths while promoting knowledge through their analysis of the photos they take. Photovoice has the potential to motivate policymakers to make change in response to expressed concerns from community members. Activities were coordinated at each partner site by their staff, engaging two 2SLGBTQIA+ participant populations: youth (18-26) and seniors (48+). Participants were recruited with priority given to individuals with intersecting marginalized identities (sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression combined with race/ethnicity, disability, newcomer status, age, and/or religious affiliation/faith).
